Support for Office 2016 and 2019 is Ending
Support for Office 2016 and Office 2019 will end on October 14, 2025. If you’re still using Office 2016 or Office 2019 for your daily work and managing your email via Outlook, it’s important to know that Microsoft will stop supporting these versions on October 14, 2025. Read on to find out what this means for you and what options you have.
What Does this Mean for Me?
After October 14, 2025, you can still continue to use Office 2016 and 2019, but there are important consequences you need to be aware of:
No more support from Microsoft
From this date, Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security patches for Office 2016 and 2019. This means that security issues discovered later will not be resolved. As a result, you risk:
- Viruses and malware
- Spyware and other malicious software
- Data breaches and security incidents
Concrete consequences
- No software updates: You will no longer receive updates via Microsoft Update
- No technical support: No more help via phone, email, or chat from Microsoft
- Limited hosting support: We can no longer help you set up or update your Hosting.NL account in Outlook
- Reduced online help: Most online help content will be discontinued
- Functionality issues: The software may stop functioning correctly over time, potentially preventing you from sending or receiving emails
What are my options?
You have three options. We strongly recommend the first two options and consider the third option risky.
Option 1: Upgrade to a newer Office version ⭐ Recommended
Upgrade your Office 2016 or 2019 to a more recent version that is still supported by Microsoft. The available upgrade options depend on:
- Whether you’re using a home version
- Whether your Office version is managed by an IT department
Option 2: Switch to an alternative email program ⭐ Also recommended
Switch to a different email program instead of Microsoft Outlook. We recommend the following alternatives:
- eM Client – User-friendly and comprehensive
- Mozilla Thunderbird – Free and open source
- Webmail – Directly through your browser
- Apple Mail – For Apple users
For setting up your email in these programs, you can follow the instructions on this page.
Option 3: Do nothing ❌ Not recommended
You can choose to continue using Office 2016 or 2019 without changes. However, this comes with significant security risks:
- Vulnerability to viruses and malware
- Risk of data breaches
- Potential loss of functionality
- No support for problems
Our Recommendation
Don’t wait until October 14, 2025. Plan your transition to a safer solution now. Whether you choose an Office upgrade or an alternative email program, make sure to take action before that date to ensure continuity and security.
