What is an API?

API

An API, or Application Programming Interface, is a set of rules and protocols that lets different software applications communicate with each other. You can compare it to an electronic interpreter that enables interaction between different systems. As a customer of SQR.NL, you can use APIs to connect your website or application with other services or external systems. But what exactly is an API?

Say you have an online store you would like to integrate a payment system here so that customers can checkout online. Instead of developing a new payment system yourself, you can use an external payment API. This API allows you to securely process payment information from your customers and accept payments.

What does an API do?

So an API acts as an intermediary between your website and the payment system. By making the right API calls, you can send payment information, verify transactions and receive confirmations. This means you don’t have to build every aspect of the payment process yourself, but can use the functionality provided by the payment system through the API.

But APIs can be used in different ways, depending on your needs. For example, they can be used to retrieve data from an external database, enable integrations with social media, synchronize shipping information with logistics service providers, and much more.

As a customer of SQR.NL, you can take advantage of the API we make available to add additional functionality to your website, create integrations with other systems and thus increase the capabilities of your online presence.
